Hall Monitor Accused of Sexual Relations with Student
A 41-year-old Robbinsdale Cooper High School hall monitor has been charged for allegedly having sexual relations with a student.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County, the father of the girl came home on June 7 and found Tajreed Rich and his 17-year-old daughter naked in her bedroom.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said it's a tragedy for a father to come home to that situation.
The girl’s father told police he recognized Rich and knew him from Robbinsdale Cooper High School.
Both the girl and Rich admitted to having sexual relations with each other on two separate occasions, according to the complaint.
Besides being a hall monitor, Rich was also a staff member on the boys football team and provided counseling to students.
Rich told police he gave the girl advice on relationships, and that she was “a vulnerable student” and he knew better than to have a sexual relationship with a student.
Freeman says it is clear that in this case Rich abused his position.
"He's 41, she is 17. She's vulnerable, he's a hall monitor. The charge here is a position of authority," Freeman said.
In 2011, Rich was hired by the Robbinsdale School District. The district said they did a background check on him and he passed. Before that, he also worked in the Minneapolis School District as an educational assistant aide substitute in 1995. He was re-hired for the same position in Minneapolis in 1998. In 1999, he was a security monitor. From 2003 until 2010, he held several other positions where he was in contact with students.
Rich has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct. He's in jail with bail set at $100,000.
School officials call it "a horrible incident." The school says Rich was fired Monday.
