While officials in St. Paul and Minneapolis say charging station usage is increasing, a 5 EYEWITNESS News analysis reveals some are rarely being used.
However, the state is planning to install dozens more regardless of usage or electric vehicle sales.
The Minnesota Auto Dealers Association says just 250 purely electric vehicles were sold in Minnesota last year.
City officials argue spending on infrastructure could prompt more electric vehicle purchases and result in environmental benefits.
But critics characterize spending money on charging stations few are using as a waste of tax dollars.
The majority of the stations have been funded with federal grant money.
Others believe drivers will not become comfortable owning electric vehicles until battery technology improves and people no longer worry about running out of battery power and being stranded.
