Lily Lake's Beach Closed After Last Summer's Amoeba Related Death

The public beach at Lily Lake in Stillwater will be closed for the 2013 swimming season.

The Stillwater City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to close the public beach.
This decision comes after two children died after swimming in Lily Lake.

Nine-year-old Jake Ariola Erenberg contracted a rare amoeba after swimming in the lake and died last August. Another child died after swimming in the lake in 2010.

A lawsuit, filed by Jack’s family in December, names the City of Stillwater and its Parks and Recreation Department in addition to Washington County and the State Department of Health.

The city's Public Works Department will post signs on May 15 to indicate the beach is closed for the season.
