Fire Destroys Mpls Deli, Impacts Children's Hospital

Operations at Children's Hospital were impacted by a fire that destroyed a nearby deli Thursday morning.

Police officers first spotted smoke coming from the basement of Chicago Avenue Deli around 3 a.m. Thursday.

The fire engulfed the deli, which is located across the street from Children's Hospital.

Fire alarms at Children's Hospital went off due to the smoke, and the heating and ventilation system were shut down. The fire alarms were also shut off and maintenance crews were called in.

The hospital said they were doing their best to control the impact of the smoke through close management of air intake into the building. They were also using air filters and masks to protect their patients and staff from breathing in the smoke.

The hospital closed its outpatient clinics until noon Thursday. It has also postponed elective surgery, radiology and lab services due to the heavy smoke.

Children's Hospital posted a message on its Facebook page. It says, "Patient safety is our number one priority, and we’re taking several precautionary measures. We’re contacting patient's families if their appointment is impacted."

Metro Transit service was impacted by the fire and the roadway was closed.

No one was injured in the fire. Still no word on what caused the fire at the deli.
