VP Biden Calls to Assess Minn. Gun Control Bills

Vice President Joe Biden is taking an interest in Minnesota's gun law debate.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk says Biden personally called him late last week to assess where the issue stands at Minnesota's Capitol, where lawmakers are debating a requirement for universal background checks for gun sales.

Bakk says Biden asked how opponents were fighting gun control measures in Minnesota. He says the vice president didn't ask him to push lawmakers to support universal background checks.

A Minnesota House panel is expected to vote Tuesday night on a bill that would expand background checks. A Senate panel passed that measure last week.

The White House has been in touch with lawmakers in several statehouses across the country as lawmakers consider changes to gun laws, most recently in Colorado.
