Jet Crashes into Homes in Indiana Neighborhood

Authorities and witnesses say a private jet has crashed in a northern Indiana neighborhood, striking three homes.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig says the Beechcraft Premier I twin-jet had taken off from Tulsa, Okla.'s Riverside Airport and crashed this afternoon near South Bend Regional Airport.

He says "There was an indication of a mechanical problem."

Herwig says he doesn't know how many people were aboard the jet.

Authorities have not confirmed if anyone has died, but say there were some injuries.

The plane is registered to 7700 Enterprises of Montana LLC in Helena, Mont. The company does business as DigiCut Systems in Tulsa, Okla., and makes window film and paint overlay for automobiles. The company is owned by Wes Caves.

In South Bend, a fire official says "some of the victims have been taken to the hospital" adding "It's still a rescue operation."

Part of the neighborhood southwest of the airport was evacuated because of concerns about jet fuel.
