Group says Minn. Gun Bill Could Impact People of Color

A large group gathered at the Minnesota Capitol Tuesday in opposition to a gun bill they say negatively impacts people of color.

DFL Rep. Debra Hilstrom and NRA leaders introduced the bill last week.

Speakers Tuesday argued that it fails to stop gun sales without background checks at gun shows, online or at flea markets. But their bigger concern is two things that are in the bill: enacting mandatory minimum sentencing and creating new felony offenses.

Leroy Duncan of Protect Minnesota says such measures will lead to disproportionate arrests in colored communities.

In Washington, D.C. Tuesday, members of the Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation that would expand background checks on all gun sales.
