Warm Temps, Ice, Deep Snowpack Could Lead to Ice Jams

Ice jams happen when large sheets of ice break off and get caught in a narrow part of a river. In extreme cases, ice jams can cause flooding.

Rivers that are most susceptible are ones that have twists and turns, narrow sections or obstructions like bridges.

It's too early to say if there will be jamming in Minnesota's rivers this spring... the depth of the snowpack and the extremity of spring's temperatures are two decisive factors.
