Charges Expected in Abduction of Minneapolis Baby

Charges are expected against a woman accused of abducting a Minneapolis baby.

The charges are expected Friday although that could change, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

Police identified Isabel Diaz-Castillo as the woman arrested on suspicion of abducting an 8-month-old baby Wednesday from a Minneapolis apartment.

Officers began investigating Diza-Castillo's involvement after hearing tips that she "had been paying an inordinate amount of attention to the child," police reported.

The baby, Carlos Orozco, was reunited with his mother just hours after police were called.

"Is that a happy ending or what?" said police Cmdr. Catherine Johnson after the baby and mother reunited.

Speaking about the ordeal Wednesday night, Vicky Orozco said Carlos was checked out and is okay.

Police say he was taken from an apartment on the 2100 block of Portland Avenue South in Minneapolis.

Carlos' mother called police around noon. She reported leaving him in his car seat in the apartment while she took a shower. When she got out of the shower, the boy was gone.

Police issued an Amber Alert as they conducted a search in the area, and also used K-9 officers for tracking.

After receiving a tip, police arrested Castillo, who is about 30 years old, at a home at 3706 Third Ave. S. in Minneapolis. Carlos was located in the basement of the home. The house reportedly belongs to a relative of Castillo.

Castillo is being held on burglary and kidnapping.

Daisy Vuenrostro and her father saw Castillo's vehicle, identified in the Amber Alert, and called police. Daisy's father, Guillermo, said within about five minutes the vehicle was surrounded by cops.

Police believe the mother and Castillo's friendship started several months ago. Castillo might have been accompanied by her 12-year-old son during the abduction.

A man who identified himself as Castillo's brother told KSTP he did not know what was going through his sister's mind.
