December Rains May Impact Spring Thaw

Warmer temperatures and rainfall last December could have an impact on farms and flooding this spring.

When temperatures dropped and snow fell in December, the water froze creating a layer that could prevent the spring snow thaw and rains from soaking into the soil.

James Fallon is a Hydrologist with the United States Geologic Survey, he says that water had nowhere to go, "A lot of those rain events, if they hit in a field they pretty much stayed in that field."

Fallon says the state needs a slow steady thaw followed by several days of gentle soaking rains.
