When is it Too Cold for School? Officials Make 'Judgment Call'

Another day of frigid temps with whipping winds has kept schools on alert.

So, how do schools come to the decision to close or stay open, delay their day or start on time?

We talked with about a dozen metro school districts, and most say it's really a judgment call.

Jay Haugen is the superintendent of Farmington Public Schools; he says you talk with local school districts, transportation officials, and you monitor the weather. In the end, you really make the best call you can.

Buses are the main reason schools close.

When it gets into the 20s-below-zero the diesel fuel can clog up and the buses won't run.

When it comes to recess, most districts have a strict policy. If the air temperature is zero or the wind chill dips to 10 below, kids generally stay indoors.
