Statewide Hunt for Veteran Contractors Winding Down

The state gives preference to veteran owned businesses bidding on road construction work. The problem is the state was not able to find enough veteran contractors to meet its goals.

Nine months ago the state launched a search to identify contractors who fit the mold. Organizers have now identified 70 veteran owned contractors and ultimately expect to identify 100. That's triple the number at the outset.

The state says veterans have earned preferential treatment in regard to the bidding process. However, the identification process is winding down. Veterans must be verified through the VA, which can be a difficult process.

A final veteran workshop is scheduled to help those interested. It's Thursday, January 31st from 1-4 P.M. at the Hiway Federal Credit Union (841 Westminster Street) in St. Paul. Advocates can help veteran contractors with the verification process.
