$80M Hwy. 100 Project Approved in St. Louis Park

The Saint Louis Park City Council voted unanimously Monday night to approve an $80 million improvement project for Highway 100. The project would replace several existing bridges south of Cedar Lake Road and north of West 36th Street.

Michael Rardin is Director of Public Works for the city, he says the highway is long overdue for reconstruction. "It's an old highway and it's carrying a huge volume of traffic," he said.

Old bridges that span the highway cause the problem. The old bridges were designed and built to cross a highway with just two lanes in each direction.  Because the bridges are so narrow it's impossible for MnDOT to add lanes for addition traffic, the result are a series of predictable bottle-necks during each commute.  To add lanes, MnDOT must replace the bridges.

Work is set to start in 2014 and wrap up in 2016.
