New Chief Sparks Big Lake Police Turnaround
Chief Joel Scharf is empowering officers and saving money for taxpayers.
Scharf took over about four months ago after the city's former Chief, Sean Rifenberick, departed amid allegations of misconduct that resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal settlements.
His departure also left the police force divided.
It's why Scharf says his immediate goal is to get the department working together as a team. Besides internal improvements, Scharf is also looking to cut costs and save money for taxpayers.
He recently moved police headquarters across the street to city hall. Besides head-quartering in a more efficient building, Scharf says the city is saving money on utilities and by consolidating phone and computer services.
