Wis. WWII Veteran Gets Medal After 65 Years

A Wisconsin man who left the U.S. Air Force 65 years ago couldn't keep away the tears when he finally received his World War II Victory Medal this week.

George Michel of New Berlin thought the local school celebration Friday was just like all the other Veterans Day events he'd attended in previous years. But when he noticed family members from out of state in the audience he realized something was afoot.

Then a teacher stepped forward and announced to the audience that Michel was about to receive his Victory Medal. He says when he heard that, "I just about melted."

Michel was with an Air Force squadron in England. A Kenosha News report says his first air mission was days after the D-Day invasion in June 1944.
