Twins Spring Training Home Gets Upgrades

The Minnesota Twins will have a fancier home for spring training and their minor league operations.

The Lee County Board of Commissioners in Fort Myers, Fla., voted Tuesday to approve more than $42 million in renovations to the Hammond Stadium complex where the Twins have trained since 1991.

Seating capacity will expand from 8,000 to 9,300. The concourse will be extended around the outfield for a 360-degree path around the field of play. The configuration of the playing field will be altered to match the geometry of Target Field in Minneapolis, where the Twins play during the regular season.

Improvements to the minor league facility include construction of housing, classrooms and other space for players and staff. The Twins will pay $3.9 million toward the dormitory.
