Mpls. Police Chief Tim Dolan Steps Down

Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan stepped down Friday after nearly 30 years with the department - six as chief.

The city says from 2005 to 2011, violent crime dropped 42 percent. That’s the lowest level since 1983.

Dolan is also credited with restarting the juvenile crime unit.

Critics say Dolan was responsible for the department's budget problems and the costly payouts in police misconduct cases.

Replacing him is Assistant Chief Janee Harteau, who was named this summer. She’ll become the first woman to lead the Minneapolis Police Department.

Harteau began working for the department in 1987 when she was 22 years old. She became deputy chief of the department's Patrol Bureau in 2009. She was promoted to assistant chief in 2011.
