Monticello Nuclear Plant Shuts Down

The nuclear plant in Monticello shut down unexpectedly Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson for Xcel Energy told KSTP.COM the shutdown happened at 11:07 a.m..
"All plant safety systems functioned as designed, and the situation posed no danger to the public or plant workers," said the spokesperson. "Plant operators are investigating the cause of the shutdown, which is not expected to be lengthy."
The plant generates enough electricity to power 500,000 homes. The spokesperson said in cases of outages like today's, Xcel buys power from other generators or increases production at its other plants to offset the loss.
