Park Board Considers Improvements for Lake Calhoun Area

The Minneapolis Park Board wants to spend $3 million to improve the connection between Lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles.

The focus of the project would be the northeast corner of Lake Calhoun where the Calhoun Yacht Club, the boat launch and Tinfish Restaurant all come together. The idea is to improve the bike and pedestrian paths and to possibly enlarge the Tinfish restaurant.

The Park Board says it needs to make the pedestrian and bike crossing at Lake Street over to Lake of the Isles safer too.

The Met Council estimates the Chain of Lakes has five million visitors every year and is now a victim of its own success. So, the Park Board wants to make the upgrades soon to make the area safer for pedestrians, bikers and motorists.

The first public meeting on the proposed project is Oct. 9. The Park Board says it will not come up with a design until they get input from the public.

The entire project is expected to take two years to complete.
