Stillwater residents will now be able to keep beehives on their property.
The Stillwater City Council passed a new beekeeping ordinance that allows residents to keep beehives on any size lot.
The City of Stillwater tells KSTP.com, beehives will need to be kept within ten feet of the property line, and neighbors will need to be notified. Residents will also need to take a beekeeping course. The ordinance allows for no more than five hives per property.
If neighbors complain to the city after notification, the permit request will be reviewed by the city.
The city is also considering changing its chicken ordinance.
The amended ordinance would allow five hens per person, with no roosters allowed.
The amended ordinance passed it's first reading Tuesday night in a vote of three to two. The second reading is scheduled for Oct. 2.
