Marriage Amendment Backers Tout Clergy Support

Minnesota clergy who believe marriage should be limited to opposite-sex couples gathered to call for passage of the amendment to put that definition in the state constitution.

About 40 leaders from various Christian denominations joined a Minnesota for Marriage press conference Tuesday on the steps of the State Capitol.

St. Paul-Minneapolis Archbishop John Nienstedt was among those to speak. The state's top Catholic leader says those who want to exclude gay couples from legal marriage do not intend to be hurtful or discriminatory but rather want to affirm marriage's traditional definition.

The campaign group leading opposition to the amendment also has a roster of prominent clergy supporters. Minnesotans United for All Families debuted a TV commercial Tuesday that features a Catholic married couple urging people to vote against the amendment.
