Minnesota Officers Discuss 9/11 Efforts for First Time

A handful of Minnesota police officers and deputies talk publicly about their work at ground zero.

The officers, who worked for several departments scattered across Minnesota, raised about $4,500 and took a Le Center squad car to New York City in the days after 9/11.

At "the pit" as they call it, the officers were assigned evidence collection duties. They were stationed next to the morgue. Whenever a fellow officer's body was recovered, the officers say everyone would stop what they were doing and stand in silence to honor the dead.

In addition to the memories each has, the officers say it's the friendships forged with New York City police officers that mean the most. The group contacted one of those NYPD officers today. The officer was on his way to a 9/11 anniversary memorial service. However, he did take the time to praise the Minnesota officers for their good deeds 11 years ago.

Watch an extended video clip of their interviews here.
