Cottage Grove Takes Down 300 Boulevard Trees

Cottage Grove is not waiting around for the Emerald Ash Borer to wreak havoc.

Instead, the city is taking a proactive approach. Crews are marking 300 ash trees with a red "x" throughout the city. The idea is to take out the younger ash trees before the pesky beetle arrives and does even greater damage. All of the ash trees are being replaced with different types of trees that are not susceptible to infestation.

Cottage Grove officials say it is cheaper to remove and replace the younger ash trees than to fight off the Emerald Ash Borer once it gets there. The city will spend $80,000 on the entire project and the target date for completion is Oct. 31. There is no additional costs to taxpayers. The money is already in the budget for this year.
