Woman Found Dead in St. Paul Fire Allegedly Killed by Son
A St. Paul woman who investigators first said died in a house fire early Thursday was allegedly killed by her son.
Michael Caldwell, 20, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree murder.
Firefighters found 49-year-old Lorine Johnson dead in her bedroom at the home on the 900 block of Carroll Ave.
The criminal complaint says Caldwell was on his way back to college in Oklahoma a couple weeks ago, but never made it. He ended up getting arrested and sent to a mental hospital in Kansas City.
According to the complaint, his mother signed him out of the hospital against doctor's orders on Wednesday.
Police located Caldwell at United Hospital in St. Paul after an emergency room social worker called 9-1-1.
Police say later Caldwell admitted to strangling his mother and then lighting the fire.
