Part-Time Minnesotan Survives Hurricanes Katrina & Isaac
Man says Minnesota is his shelter from the storms.
Victor Gaten, 23, says Minnesota is the place he runs to when the storms of life become too difficult to navigate.
After Hurricane Katrina destroyed Gaten's New Orleans home in 2005, he settled in Minneapolis.
But last year Gaten became homesick and moved back to New Orleans in time for Hurricane Isaac to hit.
Gaten was forced out of his New Orleans home and has no idea how badly it was damaged. However, he is already planning a return to Minnesota.
Gaten says he was met with open arms here after Katrina and expects the same this time. After Katrina, he found work with a North Minneapolis construction firm, Mitchell Construction Inc.
The company owner, Anderson Mitchell III, says Gaten will be welcomed back into the company if he'd like a job.
Gaten will travel to New Orleans this weekend to see the extent of the damage. Afterward, he plans on putting down roots in South Minneapolis or Bloomington.
