EmailState Fair Brings Increase in Nuisance Crime to Nearby Neighborhoods
People living in the neighborhood to the east of the State Fair say that along with an increase in foot traffic on their blocks, they also experience an increase in petty crimes. Jeanne Baumann says it start predictably with the State Fair, "They've taken lawn ornaments, and people have different things in gardens, moon lights, little globe lights."
Bern Witte lives near the fairgrounds, he says a small minority is the cause of most problems, "For the most part I think, everybody behaves really well. Heat will do some strange things to people too. Make them do crazy things."
St. Paul Police say they expect a small increase in nuisance crime in the areas around the fairgrounds, and that they provide additional patrols. Police also say that just as the petty crime may increase during the fair, it predictably returns to normal when the State Fair is over.
