EmailPavement Failures Snarl Traffic on I-94 in Mpls, East Metro
Monday's intense heat led to pavement failures that snarled traffic on westbound Interstate 94 in both Minneapolis and the east metro during the evening commute.
Road crews were busy working in the near 100 degree temperatures to patch the interstate and get traffic moving again.
A pavement buckle that partially blocked the left lane at 35th Avenue North began backing up traffic just after 5 p.m. on the interstate and on-ramps in Minneapolis.
In the east metro, traffic backed up in the westbound lanes from about Manning Avenue to the St. Croix River after a section of pavement buckled there. Crews were able to repair that spot in about two hours.
Earlier in the day MnDOT said with the high heat, they knew something like this could happen.
With more high temperatures in the forecast, MnDOT says full crews are scheduled for the rest of the week, with people on-call for the Fourth of July holiday Wednesday.
