Complaint: Man Attacked Pregnant Girlfriend, Staff at Maplewood Hospital

A man violently beat his pregnant girlfriend inside a Maplewood hospital room before attacking medical staff who came to the woman's aid.

That's according to a criminal complaint against 32-year-old Rufus Myers of Fitchburg, Wis., who was charged in Ramsey County Friday with second, third and fifth degree assault.

According to the complaint, the incident happened Thursday at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood, where Myers' girlfriend was hospitalized due to problems with pre-term labor.

Myers, who is the father of the child, allegedly smashed a vase over his girlfriend's head, then forced her against the wall of her hospital bathroom.

When several doctors and nurses entered the room and ordered Myers out, he grabbed hold of the shower curtain rod, lifted himself off of the floor and kicked the woman in her stomach and chest multiple times, the complaint states.

When a doctor pulled Myers off of the curtain rod, Myers punched the doctor in the chin and chest several times, according to the complaint. Myers continued to punch medical staff as they pushed him out of the room; he then rushed at a nursing assistant and allegedly punched her several times.

Myers' girlfriend was taken to the emergency room, where doctors performed an emergency C-section.

The Ramsey County Attorney's Office says the baby, who was born at 34 weeks, and the mother are recovering.
