MnDOT Working to Minimize Environmental Impact of Bridge Project

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is using a novel approach while replacing two bridges on I-694 in Shoreview.

MnDOT hoped to minimize the environmental impact of the project on North and South Island Lakes, the canal that runs under the highway that connects the lakes.

MnDOT engineer Steve Barrett says big projects can cause damage. He says MnDOT worked with the DNR on a plan to temporarily remove the canal between the lakes, allowing crews to work on dry land, and clear the area of any debris left behind by construction.

"We're absolutely looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly with our projects," he said.
