Construction work on a Delta airlines building at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is making workers inside sick and the union representing them is demanding solutions. Emergency crews have been called to Building C twice in less than three weeks. The building houses airline reservation agents and is used 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week. Since the end of October, construction workers have been repairing the roof using bonding adhesive, sealant and glue. Vapors from the chemicals have somehow seeped into the building. Monday a relative of one of the workers called 911 to report people inside the building were feeling ill. Sixty people went outside to get fresh air. Five people were treated at the scene and one was taken to a hospital. In an earlier incident four people needed emergency attention, two were taken to a hospital. The union that represents the workers, the International Association of Machinists, Local 1833, said one person hasn't been able to return to work. Several others have been moved to another building. Union officials think it might be prudent to move all of the workers out of the building until the construction is complete. They said they are working with Delta on a solution. Airport fire crews who responded to the 911 call Monday did test the air and found no hazardous gas. Delta did not return calls from 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. |
