The pickup truck driver who, according to the State Patrol, swerved into oncoming traffic and caused the crash that killed a father and son from Chanhassen died Monday.

Eric Sprouse, 19, was thrown from his Chevy Silverado in the Sunday morning crash. He was taken to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale where he died.

The State Patrol said Sprouse was heading northbound on Interstate 35 in Forest Lake. He cut across the grassy median and hit a Toyota Camry traveling southbound around 11 a.m.

The crash killed both people in the Camry, Jim Holland and his 4-year-old son Jude. The two were returning to Chanhassen from a weekend up north.

Valarie Dereeschuk was also driving southbound on I-35 and narrowly avoided being hit.

She said she saw Sprouse's truck swerve through the median and leave the road.

"I started screaming oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, " said Dereeschuk. "I swerved to the right, I glanced at my side-view mirror hoping that the car behind me saw it too but they didn't."

The State Patrol is looking into the cause of the crash as inattentive driving.

Jim Holland's relatives described him as a family man, who would do anything for his wife and son. The family has not finalized funeral arrangements.

A passenger in Sprouse's truck, Dustin Covey, 20, was not severely injured.
