Owners of Towed Cars Blame Mpls. Web Site Mistake

Drivers whose cars were towed say they shouldn't have to pay since the city mistakenly left the route off the online street sweeping schedule.

Kim Mulroy's car was towed Friday morning from University Avenue.

She said, "I don't have a problem with having my car being towed if I did something illegal, but they didn't give a notice. It wasn't on the web site."

Mulroy also claimed she has pictures showing "No Parking" signs ripped down and blown away by the wind.

Mike Kennedy with Minneapolis Public Works admitted the city made a mistake and failed to list University Avenue on the list of streets to be swept Friday. But, he said the city did not tow any car where "No Parking" signs were knocked down.

Kennedy said. "When we recognize it and understand and know that's it our fault we try and make it right and in this case we tried to make it right for the few people that might have gotten confused."

Kennedy did say the sweeping schedules on the web site can change. So drivers' best bet is to follow "No Parking" signs.

Mulroy is fighting the towing fee and the ticket which she said totaled $170.
