FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The two largest health systems in the Dakotas have now merged.
The Fargo-based MeritCare board of trustees voted Monday morning to approve the merger with Sanford Health of Sioux Falls, S.D. It takes effect immediately.
Officials say Sanford's board approved the merger last week.
The new system is Sanford Health & MeritCare. It has 14,000 employees.
The hospitals will have a coverage area of 130,000 square miles, including parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska.
