The city wants to build a new road that would connect 83rd and 85th Avenues. But the relatively minor project is causing a major controversy. Currently, 83rd Avenue is a dead end street south of Mills Fleet Farm. But if the city has its way, the street will continue down into a nearby neighborhood and would add 5,000 cars a day. "We try to establish the most efficient way for people within the city to get around," said Assistant City Attorney Kevin Larson. "It's a desired roadway connection obviously Fleet Farm is very interested in this." When Ken Harper says not in my backyard he means it literally. The new road extension would come just feet from his back door—that's on top of the other road feet from his front door. "I don't like it because we'll have a street in front and a street behind for my little one here I think it's going to be pretty dangerous for him to have streets on both side," he said. The city wants to build the road because too many commuters are avoiding Devil's Triangle and cutting through this parking lot of the Fleet Farm instead. The road project would cost about a half million dollars that would be split between the city, the state and Fleet Farm. The city says it will look into alternatives. The project is set for a vote on Monday. |
