The death of a 6-year-old prompted a change at a New Brighton Lake. Kyarke Lah of St. Paul was at Long Lake on a school trip Wednesday. He had been playing and jumping off a dock when lifeguards noticed he was in trouble. Ramsey County Water Patrol and New Brighton Police were called around 2:30 p.m. Within minutes, the lifeguards and adults in the area formed a human chain. They found Lah in eight feet of water and pulled him to shore. They placed Lah, who was unresponsive, in a waiting ambulance. He was taken to Regions Hospital and transferred to Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare. He was in critical condition Wednesday, but sometime overnight he died from his injuries. Ramsey County Director of Parks and Recreation, Greg Mack, said Lah was trying to swim to a raft anchored in the middle of the lake when he went under. Mack has decided to have that raft removed. Mack said, "I'm concerned about kids going beyond their capability, trying to get to a spot where they can't make it." Five lifeguards were on duty when Lah went under, which is standard. There were also school counselors on hand from Lah's summer school program. The summer school program is operated through the Roseville Public Schools. The beach was closed Wednesday, but reopened Thursday. This is Ramsey County's second drowning death this month. Anthony Yang, 16, drowned June 20 in Lake Josephine in Roseville. |
