Get 'camping' to find a new job

The summer camp season is headed into full swing, but the recession has put a new spin on the idea of 'camping out.'

It’s called Laid Off Camp—or workshops designed to empower the job seeker. The camps aim to empower the unemployed with knowledge ranging from using social networking websites to marketing their skills.

For example, experts suggest using the same photo for all of your profiles and networks.

One you land an interview, make a positive first impression by engaging eye contact with at least one to two people every moment.

For many of those who attend these camps, it's not just about networking or learning new skills, it's also about meeting others in similar situations.

"What I needed when I was laid off was to be around other people so I could lift my spirits up," explained Camp Director Jane Ackerson.

"If you can bring together a lot of people with a common cause, they can share their knowledge and information with each other and put that knowledge to good use," Laid Off Camp creator Chris Hutchins said.
