Bloomington schools see low attendance to swine flu
Parents in Bloomington were alerted Wednesday after the school district says a student was diagnosed with swine flu.
Teachers in Bloomington are expecting overall attendance to be low Thursday after an increase of sick students. The common flu seems to be spreading from Jefferson High School to other nearby schools, according to the district.
One teacher tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she had only one third of her students in her class Wednesday and has never seen so many absences.
School officials say a confirmed a case of swine flu at Jefferson was reported Wednesday, which prompted administrators to send out an alert e-mail to parents.
The Centers for Disease Control now defines a potential case of swine flu as a fever of 100 degrees or more together with a cough and, or a sore throat, but not a runny nose.
Students who have symptoms of fever over 100 degrees, headaches, or sore throats are being told to stay home for seven days. For some, that will mean coming back Tuesday, which is the last day of school.
To date, the state has confirmed 39 cases of the virus in Minnesota. Earlier this week, a confirmed case was also reported at Benjamin E. Mays International Magnet in St. Paul.
