BROWNTON, Minn. (AP) - Voters in south-central Minnesota will soon go to the polls to decide the fate of the McLeod West school district and its 500 students.
The district's finances are so poor it cannot survive another year - it will be $2.5 million in the red at the end of the year, which is over two-thirds of its annual budget.
The voters will decide Tuesday if it will dissolve or consolidate with the three nearby districts of Glencoe-Silver Lake, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthop, and Buffalo Lake-Hector School.
Supporters of the plan say consolidation will provide for an orderly transition that will benefit students and strengthen the surviving districts with additional state funds.
If the vote fails, the McLeod County Commissioners will approve their own dissolution plan. It could be different than the one approved by the four school boards.
