Minn. restaurant offers vets free weekly meals

Once a week, a little event takes place at a restaurant along the north shore of Lake Superior to honor those who served.

Larry Schanno's father died when he was 51 from physical problems he contracted fighting the Japanese on Okinawa during World War II. He lives on today through an act of kindness that Larry and his wife Deb have been giving for the past five years.

Veterans from the nearby home in Silver Bay are invited to have lunch here once a week free of charge.

"When you see their faces, you are going to see what we get out of it. That's what we get out of it. It makes us so happy when they come," Deb explained.

Over the years, others have chipped in to help pay the cost of this free lunch which sometimes can run to as much as a $100 a week. There have been times when the donations have run out.

So Deb and Larry are adamant that, even in tough times, the veterans will be fed as much as they want and whatever they want, no charge.

"If they want a six piece jumbo shrimp broiled dinner or a surf and turf, your welcome to have that," Larry said.

Most of these guys chose the meat loaf special but we caught Vietnam vet Chuck Gaalswyk with his mouth full of the best steak in the house.

"I appreciate the folks up there that sponsored this and I want to thank them," Chuck said.

Some of the World War II vets are well into their 80’s, they don't hear so good and they have trouble walking. But they love the food and are grateful that someone cares enough to give it freely.

Larry says these meals are not provided for nothing. By serving their country, these veterans prepaid.

"It's an acknowledgment of what they've done. And the money it costs? You can't put a price on this," Larry said.
