Champlin teen wins Minn. Geographic bee

Do you know the answer to the question: "To see Sandro Botticelli's famous painting, the "Birth of Venus," you would travel to which Italian city located upriver from Pisa?"

Cody Baird, who is 13 and attends eighth grade at Jackson Middle school in Champlin, did and it won him the 2009 Minnesota state-level Geographic Bee.

The event was held at St. Cloud State University Friday.

Baird won $100, an Atlas and a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the finals of the 21st annual National Geographic Bee on May 19-20.

Benjamin J. Allen from Westwood Middle School took second place and Stephan C. Gosswiller of Inver Grove Heights Middle School finished third.

At the national level, Baird will compete for scholarship money and a trip to the Galápagos Islands.

By the way, Baird's winning answer was Florence.
