Teen charged for robbing, assaulting Brooklyn Park man

Two 16-year-old boys have been charged after police they broke into a Brooklyn Park home and assaulted the 82-year-old homeowner.

Christopher Lamor Johnson and Orlando Sharbarus Fitzgerald, both of Brooklyn Center, allegedly beat the homeowner so badly that he sustained serious injuries and had to be taken to North Memorial Medical Center so doctors could stop hemorrhaging in his head.

Police say Johnson and Fitzgerald broke into the home in the 5700 block of Northport Drive on March 22. After the assault, Johnson and Fitzgerald continued to rummage through the home looking for money and valuables.

A neighbor notified officers and Johnson was found in a nearby yard along with a wallet belonging to the victim. Fitzgerald was caught while trying to run out of the house, according to the criminal complaint.

Upon questioning, Johnson told officials he committed the crime because he needed money.

Both teens remains in custody. Johnson faces first-degree assault and burglary charges. Fitzgerald is charged with first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree aiding and abetting burglary.

If convicted, Johnson and Fitzgerald face up to 20 years in prison, a $35,000 fine, or both on each count.
