An English teacher at Sleepy Eye High School was charged with criminal sexual conduct for allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old student.

New Ulm police arrested Calvin Collum, 47, at his home Wednesday. Brown County prosecutors filed the charge of Third Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct Thursday.

According to the criminal complaint, Collum and the female student had a relationship between February and March.

Investigators said during that time other students noticed Collum spent a significant amount of time with the girl.

Students said the two exchanged text messages and communicated though the internet. Students said the girl asked her friends to cover for her so she could spend weekends with Collum.

The complaint said Collum has been suspended with pay while the school conducts an internal investigation. He's currently out of jail on bail.
