Hundreds of people attended an emotional vigil Thursday night honoring a young man who was about to begin his senior year at Burnsville High School.

Three teenagers are in the hospital and another is dead after a single car crash near Coates, Minnesota, on Wednesday night.

The Minnesota State Patrol said the teen driving the SUV lost control. They were headed north on Highway 52, just outside Rosemount, shortly before 10 p.m. The SUV crossed the median and rolled into southbound lanes.

Friends of 17-year-old Ty Alyea tried to take his family's pain away at Burnsville High School during a candlelight vigil Thursday night. Ty was killed in the crash. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Friday he died from head injuries.

"Words can't express it," said Greg Alyea, Ty Alyea's father. "You never, ever think that your children have this much influence, you know, and then when they're not here, the support, it's just overwhelming."

The Alyea family is wishing Ty was still here.

"We had these moments where we would have a brother relationship and that's the hardest part about it," said Ty Ayea's brother, Drew.

Through their pain, Ty Alyea's parents have a message: Take the time to show others you care.

"I won't forget it," said his mother, Lori Alyea. "Every time I would say, I would mouth the words, 'I love you,' and he would just give me that grin like, 'I know that, mom.'"

And he knew how to be a good brother, just when his sister needed it.

"He texted me and he's like, 'Hey, let's go bowling' and I just mean, I mean wow," said his sister, Cassie. "I will remember every one of those moments that we had."

And they wish there could be more.

"Seat belts, it's insane, but back seat, use them, teenagers - use them. He was a great kid, he was a great athlete, he loved people, he really did," his mother said.

"He was a young man of character, both on and off the field," said Ty's uncle, Jim Mylander.

"He made such an impact on everyone's life. He was so funny, and I know that he's watching over us, and especially my family," said Ty Alyea’s cousin, Emily Mylander.
