Minnesota begins saying goodbye to a husband, father and hero in blue. A visitation was held Tuesday for fallen Mendota Heights officer Scott Patrick.

Patrick is survived by his wife and two teenage daughters.

“They’re really trying to get a grip on it,” Mike Brue, Patrick’s half-brother, said before the visitation. “It’s a rollercoaster ride for them.”

Hundreds of people visited St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in West St. Paul to pay their respects.

The visitation ended at 8 p.m., but the grieving process started last week, when Patrick was shot and killed during a traffic stop in West St. Paul.

On Wednesday police officers from Mendota Heights, along with law enforcement from across the rest of the state and the country, will take part in a funeral processional stretching nearly eight miles long.

An organization of police wives from across the state will dedicate 1,000 roses for the funeral.

“We spray paint them blue in honor of police,” Jessica Knutson, a volunteer with Backing the Blue Line, said.

Gov. Mark Dayton ordered flags across the state to be flown at half-staff.

Community members are encouraged to stand along the roadside during the funeral processional.
