A 12-year-old girl was shot in the neck in a random drive-by-shooting in Minneapolis nearly four years ago, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

Guadalupe Galeno-Hernandez says remembering the night of the shooting on the streets of South Minneapolis in November 2010 is painful for her.

But the now 16-year-old was able to meet someone special Saturday. With a smile, Galeno-Hernandez greeted Dr. Andre Kiragu, the man she credits with saving her live.

Kiragu, a medical director at Hennepin County Medical Center's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, oversaw Galeno-Hernandez 's recovery in the hospital after a bullet lodged in her spinal cord.

"Seeing Guadalupe make the advances she has, makes me feel very proud and very happy," Kiragu said.

It was the first time they had seen each other in nearly four years.

"The last time I saw her I was saying bye when she was headed to rehab," Kiragu said.

"Because of Lupe's spirit, and her wonderful family, that's not where her story ended.”

Although she's paralyzed, she's made some important gains.

"I can do feeding myself now. I can roll," said Geleno-Hernandez.

Doctors have told her she may never walk again, but Geleno-Hernandez hasn’t given up hope.

"There is going to be a miracle for me to walk," said Geleno-Hernandez.

Geleno-Hernandez isn’t dwelling on the past; she's planning to graduate high school and go to college.

She's never met the man who shot her, Marlon Lozano-Montano, but saw him in court once.

"I always wonder why he did it," said Geleno-Hernandez.

BMO Harris Bank on Lake Street hosted a fundraiser for Geleno-Hernandez. An account is open to gather donations to help her with medical expenses.
