A Minneapolis man is heartbroken after a Minneapolis police officer shot and killed his dog.

The owner, Paul Thomas Trott, is still looking for answers after he found his dog, Tito, shot to death in the alley behind his house.

"I've had him since he was six weeks old, and he was very close to me," Trott said.

Trott said he got home from work on Friday and let his two dogs out to play. When he noticed the back gate was open, he sent his partner, Josh, out after the dogs.

"By the time I got to the porch, I heard a pop," he said.

Tito was found two houses down lying sideways on the ground. Trott said his dog wasn't aggressive and doesn't understand why an officer would shoot.

Minneapolis police were in the area chasing a teenager. According to the police report, the dogs ran at Officer David Mattson and would not stop. The officer shot Tito to death, and a supervisor and animal control responded to the scene.

In a statement to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, police say, in part, "The decision to shoot or harm an animal is not made lightly but at times must be made immediately. Officers have no way of knowing the history of the animal or what the animal may do. Every threat must be taken seriously. These are very sad and unfortunate incidents, and ones that no one wants to occur."

Trott says he is pursuing other avenues to make sure this doesn't happen again.

"I've spoken to my city council member. I am waiting on a call from the police department so I can get a formal explanation," he said. "It's been a real genuine loss for Josh and I both to have Tito gone."

Trott tells us he is considering taking legal action. He would also like to get reimbursed for the cost of Tito. He says the purebred dog was worth $1,200.
