Whether it's the beach or the pool that's calling you to cool off, officials say remember safety first. There were scary moments in Hennepin County just this past weekend where four people nearly drowned.

Shannon Brant and her two daughters, Diamond and Nevaeh, love going to the beach at Lake Calhoun.

"Just to relax and enjoying time together," she said.

With Monday being the hottest day so far this summer, folks are flocking to water. If you are bringing the kids along there are a few things the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office wants you to keep in mind.

"Watch where the kids are when they are by the water. Secondly, wear those life jackets when you're out in the water; whether out in the boat or out swimming, and third, learn how to swim," Sheriff Richard Stanek said.

The reminder comes after this past weekend, where four girls - all under the age of 10 - nearly drowned in three separate incidents. Two drowning incidents were reported in Plymouth and one in St. Anthony. All were not breathing, but first responders were able to resuscitate all of them.

"It's ok if you want to read a book or talk on the telephone but pay attention where the kids are, priorities first," Stanek said.

So far this year no one has drowned in Hennepin County. Last year the county had eight. According to the Department if Natural Resources, as of July 16, 13 people have drowned. In 2013, there were 30 drowned statewide.

Brant says drowning is always a concern for her. She even got CPR certified.

"Honestly I don't know how I would react to that. Honestly if something happened to them guys It would be like probably the end of my world," she said.

It can take as little as a bucket of water to drown.
