A 60-year-old man's body was found in a northern Minnesota lake Friday afternoon after he apparently tried to help a 6-year-old and 2-year-old.

The incident happened on Nichols Lake, about 40 miles north of Duluth.

KSTP's sister station WDIO reports emergency responders were sent to the lake after an initial call indicated a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old were missing in the water.

St. Louis County authorities tell WDIO, 60-year-old Douglas Yentsch was pulling a tube with his grandchildren on it behind a paddle boat. The kids fell into the water, and Yentsch went in after them.

Authorities say he was found in about 12 feet of water.

Responders tried to revive him, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Authorities tell WDIO he may have been in the water up to 20 minutes.

The children have been accounted for, authorities said.

WDIO reports Air Medical was on the scene, but left without any passengers.
