Hennepin County officials are doing their part to keep kids safe on the water this summer.

Adults and kids can borrow free life jackets at French Regional Park on Medicine Lake in Plymouth as part of a program called Kids Don’t Float. There are already boxes located at Lake Minnetonka's Gray's Bay, Spring Park Bay and Maxwell Bay.

Eventually, more life jacket loaner boxes will also be installed at other Hennepin County lakes.

The program is put on by the Minnesota Water Safety Coalition, which is made up of partners including the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and North Memorial Medical Center. Cabela's donated the life jackets.

Minnesota law requires that a life jacket is accessible for each person in a boat, and kids under the age of 10 need to be wearing it while the boat is moving.
