Crews are working throughout the Twin Cities metro to improve drainage, remove debris and recover roads after constant rain caused flooding and crippled traffic.

Scott County has been hit especially hard by the storms, with Highways 41 and 101 still closed. Crews from the Minnesota Department of Transportation have added extra lanes to Highway 169 between County Road 18 and Pioneer Trail in the Shakopee area to help carry the extra traffic. There are now three lanes in each direction.

A KSTP crew attempted to drive into Blakeley Township on Monday morning and found no way in; they encountered “Road Closed” signs, blockages and barricades. The township is dealing with downed power lines and has intentionally shut off the power to help control the situation. Residents have been evacuated and are now staying in hotels or with friends and family.

The Stillwater Lift Bridge closed at 10 a.m. Monday because of high water levels on the St. Croix River, MnDOT says. Drivers are asked to use Interstate 94 or Highway 243 instead.

St. Paul is seeing some major traffic delays due to flooding Monday morning. The closure of Warner Road from Highway 61 to Eagle Street is causing major slowdowns on Highway 61 northbound heading toward Interstate 94.

Other street closures in and around downtown St. Paul include:

Water Street from Plato to Lilydale Road
Sibley Street from Kellogg to Shepard
Jackson Street from Kellogg to Shepard

Interstate 35 northbound in Burnsville will be reduced to one lane as crews finish building a dike to keep the Minnesota River from spilling onto the road. It will be reduced from three lanes to one lane between Burnsville Parkway and Black Dog Road. The lanes were previously closed over the weekend to start building the dike.

Roads that remain closed:

  • Hwy 41 Minnesota River crossing in Chaska. Closure is from 1st Street to Dem Com Lane
  • County Hwy 101 Minnesota River Crossing closed
  • Hwy 25 northbound truck lanes closed

Roads that remain restricted:

  • Northbound 169 restricted to one-lane south of Belle Plaine

Drivers should plan ahead; when a road is closed, it’s illegal to travel in that area. Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail. If travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties will apply.
